Why to study here
Today SPbU is the leading institution of higher education in Russia and is world-famous for its excellence in research and teaching. Its reputation in the XIX and XX centuries has been enforced by its 8 Nobel Prize winners and many other outstanding scholars and inventors.
Many top political figures (incl. President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin), federal ministers and business leaders of contemporary Russia are alumni of St. Petersburg University.
Since the Russian market for degree programmes in management is populated with hundreds of institutions of various nature and caliber, it is highly segmented (brand positioning of schools, price levels, etc.). In each market segment where it is represented, GSOM holds leading positions.
For pre-experience Master programmes, GSOM has the only ECTS-based and fully delivered in English offer. GSOM’s leadership in the national business education industry is reinforced by its unique (for Russia) business model of university-based business school with a full range of degree and non-degree programmes (Bachelor, Master, Doctoral, EMBA, and Executive Education).
Additionally, GSOM differentiates its programmes through:
- high-caliber full-time and research-oriented faculty body with solid (fundamental and applied) research output contributing to top quality of GSOM’s programmes, incl. concentrations such as International Management, Marketing, etc. (Bachelor); International Business, etc. (Master); International Logistics (Executive Education);
- unique global network of top academic partners, hence, a distinctive international learning experience for students, including several double-degree options;
- unique network of corporate partners from among top Russian and multinational companies that ensures right balance of academic excellence and strong connections to management practice.
Overall, after 18 years of dynamic growth GSOM gained very high reputation and recognition in Russia:
- in September 2011 it was ranked # 1 among Russian business schools in the ranking of IZVESTIA newspaper (one of the key national daily newspapers);
- in 2006 the Russian Federal Government selected (in the framework of the National Priority Project in Education) the School to be the platform for one of the two Russian world-class business schools (the other one is Skolkovo Moscow School of Management);
- the GSOM Advisory Board is uniquely strong among Russian business schools (and also by international standards) with CEOs of 18 leading Russian and global companies among its members;
- in 2009 GSOM led the consortia of 10 top Russian universities in designing the FSE-III in Management for Bachelor and Master levels (adopted in 2010 as national standards by the Ministry of Education and Science);
- since 2010 St. Petersburg University is the only elite Russian university to have Management as one of its key strategic development priorities (as specified by the Russian Government).
Currently, GSOM has bilateral cooperation agreements with 44 universities and business schools recognized as the world’s leading institutions in management education and research.
The student exchange programme is the key activity in most of these agreements (in 2010/2011 there were more than 300 incoming and outgoing exchange students at GSOM).
In addition to this, GSOM has a substantial number of academic partners with whom the School carries out joint research projects, such as GEM (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) with Babson College, runs faculty development programmes (i.e., HEC Paris, Haas School of Business), or jointly designs and delivers educational programmes (HEC-Paris; WU-Vienna; Aalto University School of Economics; Fuqua School of Business, Duke University; EBS Business School; Lappeenranta University of Technology).
Representatives from the corporate world (CEOs of 18 top Russian and multinational companies) on the GSOM Advisory Board provide strategic guidance, financial support and feedback on GSOM educational programmes.
The Board and its Committees meet regularly to ensure the proper development of GSOM. Two major Russian companies - AFK Sistema, and Sberbank - were invited by GSOM to and became Russian corporate members of the CEMS global alliance.
The GSOM Career Centre has links with more than 160 Russian and international companies and organizes:
- Career days (twice a year, in Fall and Spring semesters) and company presentations;
- Company days (i.e., Sberbank, Rosneft, and PricewaterhouseCoopers);
- In-company projects (including compulsory consulting projects for Master and EMBA students);
- Business plan contests (Godwin Wong Annual Business Plan Competition, etc.);
- Summer internship programmes (compulsory for Bachelor and Master students);
- Guest lectures (more than 40 business leaders presented in 2010/2011);
- Guest lecture series and jointly designed and delivered courses (with Citi, PricewaterhouseCoopers, etc);
- Business games (L’Oreal, KPMG, Microsoft, Unilever, etc).
In addition, representatives from corporate partners regularly participate in admissions to Master programmes, and offer scholarships for most talented applicants and students from Russian regions.
