I want to apply for an mba program in US .
What colleges can i expect to get into with a gmat score of 700 and an experience of 16 to 18 months?

      Hi there,

thank you for your question. Contratulations for the 700 GMAT score. That's an excellent result and with this you can apply for any school. Of course, the 700 is no guarantee as the schools consider many criteria during the admissions process whereby the GMAT is just one out of many. But at least, your GMAT score will not kick you out of any admissions process.

As for your work experience, I recommend you to either do a Master in Management (MIM) in 2013 or 2014 or start the MBA in 2015.

      • As for the MBA, the mininimum number of years is 2 years but most schools require 3 years. This means that you may find schools that accept you with 2 years - but given that the MBA is for professionals, I always recommend doing it with 3 - 5 years at minimum. Why? Because then the learning effect is the higher than with 2 years only. Keep in mind that the MBA is a degree for professionals and part of the studies is the interaction with other MBA students and the integration of everyone's industry knowledge in the classroom. The more work experience you (and your classmates) have the more you can contribute to the class.

        Thankyou for ur reply sir.
If i have to consider doing MiM, can u please suggest some good colleges in ths US which provide the course and in which i can apply. Because according to what i searched there are very few colleges which provide MiM in USA.
It would be very helpful if u provide me with a list of colleges that can take me in with my scores.

          Hi there,

don't worry about your scores. They are great. As for the MBA, you can apply for any MIM with them.

As for US schools that offer a MIM, your observation is correct. The Master in Management is only an emerging topic there and certrainly less popular than the MBA. Please use our Search Filter at the MIM Compass website to find programs

          • Program Focus: Masters in General Management:
          • Teaching mode: full-time
          • Region: North America
          • Entry requirement: first degree in business NOT required (if you don't have a business degree)

Now you have a list. A useful approach is now that you look for MIM programs AS IF you were looking for an MBA program. For example, you should look for schools that

There are other approaches as well, of course, but this approach suggested above helps you narrow down your search a bit.

As you see, there are not too many North American MIM programs, a bit more than 50. So, as a next step I suggest that you screen the websites of these schools - or at least of those schools that you have selected after checking accreditation and rankings - trying to get a sense of the companies that recruit there.

The next step then is contacting a small selection of schools personally ot get more information about their career statistics.

          Best wishes

Hi sir, thank you for your reply . Your insights are proving very useful sir i must say. I went through the college profiles of the colleges providing MiM as guided by you.

Most of the courses i found to be 10 months long and the colleges dont mention the placements and job perspectives after the course.

If i could draw your attention towards an MBA again, i would have 18 months of experience by the time i apply to colleges in November . But as i am looking for a fall 2104 entry , by the time i start, my experience would have become 2 years and as you mentioned in an earlier reply colleges would consider me with a 2 year experience.

So, based on my profile and the student profiles of the respective colleges providing an MBA i have shortlisted some colleges . could you please guide me about my chances of getting into any of the following colleges.

      1. university at buffalo , SUNY.

      2. north carolina state university.

      3. University of Georgia, Terry college of business.

      4. University of Illinois urbana champaign, college of business.

      5. Hofstra (Zarb) , hampstead new york.

      6. University of Missouri, columia, trulaske college of business.

      7. University of Texas Dallas, Jindal school of management .

      8. University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Isenberg school of business.

      9. University of Pittsburgh, Katz graduate school of business.

      10. University of Cincinnati, Lindner college of business.

11.University of Oklahoma, Price college of business.

      1. College of William & Mary ,Mason School of Business

      13.CUNY baruch , Zicklin

      1. University of Houston, Bauer college of business.

      2. rutgers university.

Thankyou , looking forward for your reply.

        Hi there,

thank you for your question. In that case, you can apply for an MBA. And as to my best knowledge, US MBA's are even more open to accept people with two years of work experience than European schools.

Regarding your GMAT score you are save as it is very good. So, now you need to screen the websites of the schools mentioned above and check under "admission" whether they accept 2 years of work experience or not.

        Here are some further advices:

        • Career statistics: I would only apply for a business school that either publish their career statistics - for instance, how many percent of your graduates found a job 3 months after graduation last year? - or at least deliver it to me once I ask for it.
        • Accreditations: Try to look for schools that have an internationally recognized accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS, or AMBA).
        • Rankings: Consider schools that appear constantly in internationally recognized rankings.

        Best wishes

        Hi there,

so far, you have every information that you need to apply. You can apply at all of them and have chances to get in, based on the information that you gave me (GMAT score and years of work experience).

Whether you eventually become accepted or not depends on many other criteria, for instance:

        • Your essays during the admissions process
        • Your interview
        • Your actual work exprience (your responsibilties, the industry, the employer)
        • Your undergraduate grades
        • The other applications that a school receives and whether you differ from them: e.g., keep in mind that many schools want diversity; if they receive many applications from people of the same culture or experience they may take only some and prefer people from other cultures and backgrounds; you can try to find out about the student background in advance, however. This information should be available online or accessible through the admissions department; if you don't receive this information I would not recommend you to study there.
        • etc.

So at the moment, it is impossible to assess your chances to become accepted further. Again: A GMAT of 700 is a very good score and admissions people will acknowledge that.

Final advice: If I was you I would less focus on your chances to become accepted - as they should be good - and rather focus on finding the 3 to 5 colleges that BEST fit to YOU and your career goals. For that, you need information on career statistics and evaluate to which extent they make you confident that you reach your career goals. Again: If you don't get such statistics I would not apply.

        Best wishes
